Been doing too much questing, and my spells and imp are in dire need of an upgrade. Rrrr.

A heart that's full up like a landfill

If there was a song that could sum up my dealings with 2006, it would be No surprises by Radiohead. I know I'm 19 days too early for a reminiscence post, but I don't know if I'll have an internet connection on the 31st, so this will have to do.

It's a simple song with a haunting melody, sung with an emptiness that is both comforting and moving. The
Glockenspiel riffs in the background add to this, this feeling of overwhelming hopelessness where one can only look forward to death; "A handshake of Carbon-monoxide".

On hindsight, it's pretty bloody emo, but this has not been a good year.

Blimps aside, the song serves as a reminder of Mr. Koh's awesome Language Arts lessons, which served as something to look forward to on Monday and Friday. I pity the '07 batch as they will not experience his 1337, no, 31337ness. Good luck in the MOE!

Many things have happened this year, some of which were not very pleasant. To regulate them into lists would be inhumane. Death was a very big part of 2006, with the passing of a primary school classmate and being told that a couple of dear friends have cancer. I shall not elaborate on cancer, but I mentioned in an earlier post that I would write about the funeral at a later date. So I shall.

It came as a shock, basically. When I heard the news, I was still puzzled over the tragic death of Steve Irwin It was a double-whammy you could say. After it sunk in, there was a very clear sense of alienation, where everyone else on my contact list was mourning over Steve Irwin, a little group of us were losing sleep over Yew Zhi Hao from Raffles Institution, aged fifteen. Totally insignificant on the world's news radar, but infinitely more personal.

The wake was.. surreal. When we went to see him, he didn't look peaceful, or sleeping. He looked dead. Wax-white skin, closed eyes, lips sewed together with a clear thread, new white jacket zipped all the way up, lying in a coffin of pale wood with a panel of clear plastic that allowed us to see but not to touch. The mind forgets what the surroundings looked like, but it remembers the details, and the coffin was the focal point.

We sat around outside after that, not speaking, not looking at each other. His father came to talk to us, to tell us what happened. Nothing out of the ordinary was going on. His fever had subsided, and the doctor at the polyclinic told us to go to the hospital if his fever continued for more than three days. But it didn't, so we nursed him at home.

We talk to him in there. It is important not to cry there. If we do, he might linger on on Earth, and we don't want that to happen. So if we feel like crying, we come out here, and then we can go back in.

---

The group of us left at around 7ish, 8. My chinese teacher called, asking for my essay. We took the MRT back, packed in the train, wearing black. Nobody gave us a second look. We were just a bunch of teenagers, and black is our colour, part of our identity that signals who we are, nothing really special.

The day of the cremation was heartrending. We went to see his body for the last time, and I just felt numb. People had left their paper goodbyes on the plastic panel, some of them were on coloured paper, some of them were proper cards written neatly, but the most prominent was the one written on two pages of foolscap, stapled, and folded into four.

Goodbyes said, we went outside and waited. A woman came up, his teacher I think, and thanked us all for coming. Then we all turned around and heard the coffin being loaded up on the hearse. Then we walked behind it, a mass of secondary school students, while music played and people watched. After that, we boarded the buses and went to Mandai crematorium.

The sound of the coffin being lead in and through the entrance to the crematorium is something I'll never forget. It's sterilised, mechanical, and a poor way to say goodbye to someone who lived.

I would have used a song name as a title, but seeing that the song stuck in my head right now is the Captain Planet theme song, I probably shouldn't.

Oh to Hell with it.

EARTH!

FIRE!

WIND!

WATER!

HEART!

GO PLANET!!

Now that that's out of my system, Things Have Happened/Are Happening in my life right now, and I have no idea what to do about them.
